Metaphysics and Practical Philosophy:

The Actuality of Francisco Suarez’s Thought 400 Years Later

UNISINOS, São Leopoldo (RS), Brazil

25-28 of September, 2017

Francisco Suarez SJ (1548-1617), one of the most influential philosophers and theologians of the 'Second Scholasticism', was able as almost no one else to revitalize philosophical and theological research in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by means of a profound and innovative reading of both Thomas Aquinas and Duns Scotus, among others. Suarez is commonly praised for his widespread, exhaustive and systematic treatment of almost all existing philosophical knowledge of his time and age and yet he was able to produce an amazing synthesis that in no way does compromise the deepth, strength and originality of his thought. He worked in a variety of theoretical fields, including metaphysics, natural theology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of action, ethics, political philosophy and law. In all these areas, he produced ideas that became so pervasive and widespread that nowadays they can hardly be identified. In the last four hundred years many great and diverse thinkers have confronted themselves with the many contributions of Francisco Suarez, namely figures such as Leibniz, Grotius, Pufendorf, Schopenhauer or Heidegger, each one of them hailing the former professor from the Collegio Romano and the University of Coimbra as a source of inspiration and an unavoidable influence. Hugo Grotius, for example, referred to this Jesuit theologian and philosopher as a man of such depth, breadth of thought and sharpness of mind without equal.

On occasion of the fourth centenary of the death of this remarkable Jesuit philosopher (Lisbon, 25 of September of 1617), the Graduate Program in Philosophy of the UNISINOS and the Institute Humanitas of the same University in partnership with COMIUCAP are organizing an International Symposium with the goal of furthering academic research on the importance and impact of Francisco Suarez in the configuration of Western Thought, but particularly in areas such as Law, International Relations, Metaphysics and Political Philosophy as well as in Theology and the history of the Society of Jesus.

Objectives

Research and debate Francisco Suarez’s philosophical, theological and legal thought, its influence and current relevance in the areas of metaphysics, natural theology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of action, ethics, political philosophy and philosophy of law. More specifically, the Symposium intends to: Highlight the importance and relevance of one of the most important thinkers in the history of the Society of Jesus • Promote the academic study of Suarez’s work and critically revisit the issues worked by him in fields such as Just War Theory and International Law • Promote a serious debate on some of the current political and philosophical issues of our time in the light of Suarez's own philosophical contributions • Openly discuss the relevance of Suarez's work for our time • Discern the presence of Suarez’s work and thought in contemporary legal, political and philosophical thought Promote the Jesuit Memorial Library at the UNISINOS as an important tool for research on the Iberian and Latin-American Second Scholastic.
